Transferred! and thoughts on Bad Bentheim

December 7, 2015

They done put me in a new area. I have been transferred to Braunschweig in the Hannover stake.  It is a little east of Hannover. The ward has about 130 members and it sounds like the ward is pretty good, too. I have heard that it is one of the best wards to serve in, in the entire mission so that is pretty cool I guess.

There is not too much that has happened this week but it has been a good week and I will be sending pictures today (mom note: the pictures did not happen but I’m sure they will happen next week—it was probably hectic with packing to move)

This week we did not visit any place for a conference or anything, but we are spending the day with our district today because one elder is finished with his mission.  When a missionary leaves to go home, they leave on Monday now and they meet with the mission president in Freiberg (where the temple is located) so we are staying with the other elder until tomorrow afternoon.

What I have loved most about being in Bad Bentheim are a few things, first is that the ward is so small it feels like you are part of the ward and you help everyone too, the other thing is that it is all farmland and a lot of our service projects were farm work and other things of that nature.

We have shared the new Christmas video with almost every member in the ward.
You asked what the most Christmas-y thing that I have seen this week and the most Christmas-y thing I have seen this week is a Christmas market. I actually got to try shaorma this week and that was really good too.

The past week I have studied the very first chapters in Alma so that was pretty good. It is always interesting to read about how Alma truly leaves everything to go and preach to the people.  If I had to choose one Christ-like attribute to work on this week it would be humility.

I was thinking about how you have the sister missionaries in your ward now and how it would be pretty funny if I have an experience like Lindsay Anne had with Elder Dale at BYU-Idaho-- where the sister recognizes me from the pictures at home. (mom note: a family story—we had a missionary serving in our ward for a long time and he got to know the families really well. During this time our daughter was at BYU-Idaho.  After the elder went home, he also attended BYU-Idaho—and ended up in the same class as our daughter—and recognized her from the pictures on our wall.  Elder Dale introduced our daughter to her future husband)

Scripture for the week Alma 5:12 "And according to his faith there was a mighty change wrought in his heart. Behold I say unto you that this is all true."

Quote of the week is "You just had to love him [President Spencer W. Kimball]" President Thomas S. Monson.

I do not really have too much to say but it has been a really good week.   I love you and pray for you and the rest of the family every day. I hope that you have a great week. Love you.

Mission Conference with Elder Ballard (continued) and Zone Conference for Thanksgiving

November 23, 2015

Our meeting with Elder Ballard on November 15th was really good. He talked to us about talking with people on buses and trains and other cool stuff like that too. He talked about the importance of doing that because when he was mission president he implemented that and the baptisms in his mission went from 20 a month to over 80 a month by the time he was done being mission president. It was really cool and I really liked it. We got to shake Elder Ballard’s hand too. We stayed with the APs in Berlin that night and there were 14 elder staying in one apartment (including my companion and me).  We used most of our p-day time the next day to drive back from Berlin to Rheine.  My companion drove to Berlin and back because Californians aren't allowed to get a German driver’s license and no one else in the car had a driver’s license either. I got to see a few of my old companions but there was not too much time for catching up. My MTC group was all there and I think most of them are doing pretty good too.

It sounds like you are off like a herd of turtles for the Christmas season already. (I think I am turning into dad, because I wrote that last sentence without thinking about what I was saying.) You got all the Christmas boxes down and that means this will be my second year not decorating with the family. Are you thinking about getting a small tree again this year or are you going to go big to welcome the new addition (Z’s fiancé) to the family? Sounds like you do not have to do too much decorating if Z & N are going to do a lot of it--that is good for you. My companion is really into Christmas and tries to decorate the apartment and listens to Christmas music. Do you ever have a companion that was really into Christmas?
The branch has activities about once a quarter I would have to say but it is still pretty fun. We have 3 youth in the ward but no young adults. My favorite family in the ward is a Dutch family that owns a ranch and is actually a part member family. The couple reminds me of you and dad just because of the way they act, and they are always super nice to the missionaries too.

We had 4 eating appointments this past week, we ate döners at one eating appointment, we had ribs and fries at another one, we had rice, vegetables, and beef at another but it is called something else and was really good, and another we had a type of Pacific Islander food which was pretty much like an egg roll but wasn't rolled up and it had chicken instead of beef. It was good.

I think my German is slowly getting better, I like reading the New Testament in German now because I think it says things more clearly in German than English sometimes.  I think it is pretty cool that I can read it in German and understand pretty much everything being said too!!

The zone conference on Thursday (Thanksgiving) will be the whole day and they will be feeding us there and then we have to drive all the way back home the same night too so it will be a long day.

In response to your “eating an extra slice of pie for me” comment, my scripture for the week is Ephesians 6:4 "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." I would say focus on the bold part of that scripture. Just kidding dad, I love you and hope that all the pie tastes really good and hope that you have a great Thanksgiving, too!!

Quote for the week "Come on Elder you have to finish dinner before you get the dessert." -from a member in my ward.

I love you and hope that you have a good week and that Thanksgiving will be wonderful and you get to know your future daughter in law a little better too!

Elder Spencer Fisher

Mission Conference and the Primary Presentation

November 16, 2015

Hey exciting news! This week was really interesting because we had a surprise mission conference with Elder M. Russell Ballard! Last Friday, we got a mission conference call in the morning and President Fingerle told us all that we will be having a mission wide conference in 2 days (Sunday night) and Elder M. Russell Ballard will be there and will address us. So I went to Berlin this past weekend for a surprise mission conference. Because of the mission conference, we didn't teach Sunday school because we had to leave for Berlin after sacrament meeting (it was a 4 hour drive).

This past Sunday was also the Primary Presentation.  The Primary Presentation was really good and, as always, some kids forget their lines, some are really nervous, and other do down right funny things up there.

As far as teaching the gospel, some weeks are better than others to be able to teach investigators with the lessons but it usually is about 7 or so lessons a week right now.

My favorite place to visit this week was a place called Vreden because we went dooring there and when we got to this one door, a lady answered and said in perfect English "it is the Mormon missionaries" and we were kinda shocked!  It turns out she kinda grew up in Utah for part of her life so that was really cool. That is also the coolest person I met this week.

We have not had snow yet but I keep hearing that we will have a little bit.

I heard about the terrorist attacks in Paris the day after it happened because it is really big news.

Scripture for the week Matthew 6: 14-15: "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

"We need great teachers" Elder M. Russell Ballard from mission conference.

Love you and hope you have a good week. I love you and can't wait to talk to everyone in 5 weeks.

Celebrating a Birthday on a Mission, Bad Bentheim Ward, and Thanksgiving plans

November 9, 2015

Elder Fisher’s dad asked: “Well, you're a year older but the question is, are you any wiser?  Did your companion sing happy birthday to you in German?  Any cake?”

Elder Fisher in his new suit.
And here is Elder Fisher’s response:
Well the wise man built his house upon the Rock and I haven't even built a house yet so that might be saying something dad. My companion and most of the Germans sang the Happy Birthday song in English so that was pretty cool I guess. I didn’t get cake—but I got an apple pie from a member in my ward like 3 days after my birthday so that was good. As for the rest of my birthday, we spent it at a district meeting and the district sang Happy Birthday to me. We then had a lesson with a less active member and it was super spiritual and good.  For the last part of the day, since my companion had a meeting the next day in Hamburg, we drove somewhere and overnighted in a place called Leer (about 80 miles from Bad Bentheim) and those elders made dinner for us and it was a fun day (just not a lot happened).

As for the Bad Bentheim ward, yes, we do have a branch ward mission leader. We are not sure what we are teaching in our monthly Sunday school (which is next week) but I am sure it is something good. We usually check it a few days before so we are not quite sure yet. Our ward does have the annual Primary Sacrament Presentation--it is next week here and the whole ward is so excited about it too.

Since our ward covers so many cities, we work a lot in certain cities.  We decide which city we are going to visit and we go and work in one city for a few hours.  Then we switch cities after a few hours and basically, we set up our appointments to go with the cities we are.

As for Thanksgiving, Germany doesn't really celebrate Thanksgiving but we have a zone conference that day so it is kind of a celebration for the missionaries.  However, there is a lot of Christmas stuff out already but the stores are not enclosed malls here--I would say everything it set up pretty close to how the W_______ Shopping Center near home is set up—all the doors open to a central area and the center area is open.

I am looking forward to our Christmas call—you asked if I could read part of the Christmas story…can I read the scripture from Luke when the Angel visits the shepherds in the field?   I am excited to meet my future sister-in-law at Christmas during our Skype call.  I hope that they can get everything for the wedding planned, too.  Instead of holding up my pictures for the photos, I heard of these things called cardboard cut outs and that might work for me so I can be in the family pictures.

Scripture of the week 1 Corinthians 13:4 "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,"
Quote "I don't know many things, but I know some things" -someone

Thanks for all of the stuff and the birthday email, I hope you have a good week. Love ya mom and dad.

Loving the Bad Bentheim, the Food Channel helped teach cooking, and Senior Missionaries

November 2, 2015
Elder Fisher called this his "cannon selfie"
at Burg Bentheim castle

This week was pretty good and we are really getting along in the companionship still.  I still love the area and would love to stay here for Christmas and I would also be here for my year mark as well so that would be cool. I usually get to know everyone in the ward pretty fast but it is hard for the members to get to know the missionaries. However, I feel like the Bad Bentheim ward knows me pretty well--this area is probably my favorite so far and the ward really trusts me so it is really good. We do have a primary program here--we have about 15 kids in the program and that is really big for a small German ward/branch.

There are about 25 towns in the Bad Bentheim branch area, but the big ones are Rheine, Schüttorf, Nordhorn, Ahaus, Lingen, Bad Bentheim, Ochtrup, and Gronau. In our area there are not too many refugees—I’m sure there are more than I know about but I don’t know where they are living or where Germany is sending them to.

...and he called this the "double cannon selfie"
at Burg Bentheim Castle
There are six missionaries in my district, us in Bad Bentheim and 4 in Osnabrück.  We had a senior couple serving in our zone but they just went home. The senior missionaries usually work with the YSA in the stake and they help the missionaries, they inspect the missionaries’ apartments, they help the mission run from a different side of things. Their job is not too similar to what we (I mean finding and dooring and stuff like that) they also try to help the elders in any way they can.

This past week, my companion and I met a Catholic deacon that talked with us for like 15 minutes and he said he has a lot of respect for us doing something like a mission at this time in our lives.

Halloween here is just an excuse to party so the missionaries had to be inside at 6:00 p.m.  So on Halloween night, we stayed inside and talked for about 2 hours about important (maybe not so important) topics like music and other stuff then spent time catching up on writing in our journals for the next hour so we were somewhat enjoying Halloween plus we also had a few lessons earlier that day so I cannot complain too much.
A view from the Burg Bentheim Castle

When it is my turn to cook, I cook pizza, Brot Wurst, bacon and eggs, french fries, country style potatoes, and a few other things. Watching the Food Channel so much before my mission really is starting to pay off.

By the way, we actually changed the clocks a week ago! I was wondering why you didn't say anything about that last week! But yeah we changed the time a week ago, because that is when Germany did it.

I am really happy for Z.--I am glad he found someone, it seems all the siblings are getting married about 3 years apart from each other so it looks like I will have to get married in about 2019 the way I look at it. And thanks for the considerate idea of holding up a picture of me for the wedding photos. At least I will see them sometime and since they are getting married after my year mark, I really won't have too long to wait to meet her.
The castle's chemistry lab.

The Elder's are in the dungeon!!
   Thanks for the scripture
you sent in my letter, I actually read that scripture this morning in personal study (Jacob 2: 18)!  My scripture of the week is: 2 Nephi 33:3 "But I, Nephi, have written what I have written, and I esteem it as of great worth, and especially unto my people. For I pray continually for them by day, and mine eyes water my pillow by night, because of them; and I cry unto my God in faith, and I know that he will hear my cry." We learn a few things here, 1) Nephi cries for his people in quite a literal way and 2) the Nephites used PILLOWS, it isn't some mind blowing doctrine but I never noticed that before and never thought that the Nephites would have used pillows.

Quote for the week. "Don't thank me for the food, thank God that I woke up this morning and still had the ability to cook you this food." An African members of our ward at an eating appointment.

I am having fun and hope that ya'll are going to have a good week! And have some cake and ice cream on the 4th for me!  I am super excited to be 19--finally my last year as a teenager and it will be completely spent in the service of the Lord. Then once I turn 20, I go home like 2 months after! Crazy, I have been out longer then a lot of missionaries now, but I am still younger than most of them!

6 More Weeks in Bad Bentheim, Teaching Sunday School, and Sequoia!

October 26, 2015

Companion exchange pictures (from another missionary's blog)
Everything is real good here in Germany. My companion and I are staying together for another transfer together in Bad Bentheim so that means that this is the first city where I am staying at least 3 transfers!! I am happy, happy, happy!  I am so happy too because I absolutely love this area that I am in right now.

We usually teach the Youth Sunday School during church but this month we had an investigator at church so we had an investigator Sunday School class instead and that was good (Sunday School is only held once a month).

As for the Bad Bentheim ward, most of the primary kids in our district (a group of wards and branches) are actual from our Ward and we have about 20 kids. We have a very young branch.

Another photo of missionaries (from the same missionary blog)
There is not too much to report on but I did meet someone that went and visited the Sequoia National Park a few years ago and we had like a 20 minute conversation about where that person has been (mom note: Sequoia National Park is a favorite family vacation place). It was a good conversation and the person said to call and come by sometime and she would make us an apple crisp or something like that. It was a good day.

We always hear things about the refugees from the Middle East coming to Germany but there are already a lot of people from the Middle East here in Germany so it isn't too noticeable I think.

Since we have to be in our apartment by 6 pm on Halloween, I’m not too sure what are plans will be but I think we will probably do extra studying or weekly planning or something, not to sure right now.

It is really weird seeing all these younger guys going on missions (mom note: Elder Fisher is turning 19 next week—and to hear him talk about the ‘younger guys’ is interesting!). It is truly a life changing experience. Do you actually have Elder A’s email address I would like to send him an email. J. is going to Canada?--that is cool, but it still isn't like the Germany Berlin mission.

Scripture for the week 2 Chronicles 32: 7-8  "Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah."

Quote of the week, "I am not a people person." By a husband a of a member of our Ward which made me think of my cousin J____ who said "I just don't like people"

I pray for you guys every night. Love you mama. Love you dad and thanks for supporting me out here and being a good example for me too about what I ought to do.

Learning Christ-like Love

October 19, 2015

I am still doing good with the companion we are working. This past week, I went on companion exchange with Elder Williams from San Diego, California.  My German is good but I think I still sound like an American when I talk which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I want to get more of a German accent.

We just had zone training meeting and we learned about prayer and Book of Mormon and working with your Ward better and the next one will be in November (mom note: besides training, this is when they get all their mail and packages from the mission office).   I got the box and the chocolate was not melted and I love everything you sent with it too.

Most humbling experience would probably have to be not one experience but a series of experiences. There are a lot of people from the Middle East and Africa here in Germany and in their culture it is custom to accept people into their home and offer them food, and it is always a humbling experience to see these people who only have so much and offer so much to make someone else feel comfortable in their home. It has really showed me how to be more Christ-like with my fellowmen.

I have had to give several lessons in German and testimonies but never like a 15 minute talk but it isn't that nerve racking. Honestly I am more nervous to give talks and lessons in English now because I do not really do that so I am not used to it.  I was guided by the Spirit this past week when I gave a sick blessing to a little girl in the ward who has an injured leg right now and is on crutches right now.

I do not think that I met anyone interesting this week but it was a slower week here but those aren't too common here so it's okay.

You asked my advice for future missionaries:  I would say the biggest help would probably for a prospective missionary to go and help the missionaries with joint teaches to talk with them to just try to go out with missionaries as much as they can.

In Germany, they do celebrate Halloween but Halloween is just a party event here and we have to be inside at 6 pm on Halloween so nothing bad happens.

Scripture of the week 1 Nephi 22:31 "Wherefore, ye need not suppose that I and my father are the only ones that have testified, and also taught them. Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is. Amen."
Quote of the week: "Faith is not by chance but by choice." Neil L. Anderson

Love you mama and love ya dad. Have a good week.

Autumn, Visiting an International Border, and Missionary Work

October 12, 2015
Leaves changing colors in western Germany

It's fall… I see the colors changing on the trees…but it is actually a little colder than fall.  Actually, I would say because it was below freezing Sunday and we had to scape ice off our car windshield yesterday I would say it is more like winter. There will be a little bit of snow it sounds like but nothing too crazy I do not think.

The work is going but it could be better at times. No big complaints though. In this area we are able to contact a lot of people like less actives and former investigators that I wasn't really able to do in my other areas. The Bad Bentheim branch meets in a church building (compared to rented office space like in Halle).  As for branch leadership, we only have branch council once a month and we are always there.  The leaders are pretty good about helping with most things we do.

We use members and sports to contact people and the sports we play are basketball and soccer.

Visiting the border of Germany & The Netherlands
Elder Fisher is showing his obedience to mission rules:
He is NOT stepping over the border
and out of mission boundaries
On P-days we sometimes go places, like last week we visited the border of The Netherlands since it is one of the borders of Bad Bentheim.

We made ice cream
Germany celebrates Oktoberfest but is not really a very big deal where I am at and most of the parties for Oktoberfest are in September here.

Thanks for the story about me--I really enjoyed it especially since this story told me I am the only child that was early. Even when I was a newborn I was early for everything.  I did get the package from “Z” and I told him that last week. I am picking up the box from you tomorrow because they gave me a slip today that I can pick it up on Tuesday at 10 am.

Scripture for the week: 1 Nephi 14:7: “For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the captivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.”

Quote for the week: "hey Jack!" Uncle Si

Love you and thanks for all the support that you give me and how much you love me. Have a great week.

Conference Weekend and Loving Germany

October 5, 2015

I had a really good week and I am having so much fun out here it is ridiculous.  Germany is pretty good.  I love it here.  I am really looking forward to my first Christmas and birthday in Germany--I have heard that there is nothing like Christmas in Germany!!

A lot has happened this week but it is too much to put into emails, we mostly saw a lot of blessings this past week and I think it is a direct result of us trying to be more obedient and to work harder as well.

Conference weekend was really good! I haven’t watched the Sunday afternoon session yet but we are going to download it to our iPads and listen to it in our apartment and in the car. We watched the first session (Saturday morning) in another branch building because we wanted to have a TV to watch it on but we ended up having to watch it on one of our iPads anyways so that was pointless, but we went to a member’s house to watch two of the sessions yesterday (Sunday) in English and we ate at their house and we watched the Sunday morning session at our church building so it was a fun thing of conference for us. (Note: The Sunday morning session was on at 6 pm in Gemrany) I probably got the most from Elder Hales’ talk and I especially liked President Eyring’s talk in the priesthood session about how a pickup truck helped someone to do less active work--it made me realize that when I get back home I need a truck to help others in the church. We listened to all sessions in English .

On Mondays we have P-day and we go and buy the things we need and sometimes we do other cool stuff. On Monday nights we have FHE with a family in the ward usually and dinner there too.

For lunch at the bakeries, I usually get a different sandwich every time but usually something with meat in the sandwich. My favorite German dessert is really hard to choose but I usually buy a different one every time too, most things with fruit I like to eat actually, I know that doesn't sound too much like me but yes. You asked about my weight since I am eating such great food--I gained weight in the MTC and then lost it during my first two transfers and now I have gained a little bit of weight back just because I am in a car area but for the most part I weigh the same as when I left home, and for 9 months in Germany, that ain't too shabby.

My favorite way to contact people is through sports and through the members and those ways are also the easiest to do as well.  I do not believe I met anyone too interesting this past week but we did meet a less active family we have been trying to meet in a long time.

I feel that the biggest way the Holy Ghost has helped me the most this week was telling us to change our plans to get in contact with people this past week and that is really a huge blessing.

Scripture for the week is Mosiah 18:9 (mom note: the following passage is Mosiah 18: 8-11)
"And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light; Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life— Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?  And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts.

And the quote of the week is a poem:

“World, O world, of muddled men,
Seek the Peace of God again:
In the humble faith that kneels,
          In the hallowed Word that heals;
In the courage of a tree,
          In the rock’s integrity;
In the hill that holds the sky,
          The star you pull your heart up by;
In the laughter of a child,
          Altogether undefiled;
In the hope that answers doubt,
Love that drives the darkness out. …
          Frantic, frightened, foolish men,
Take God by the hand again.”      --Joseph Auslander

I hope that you have a great week and help someone every day!

Love,

Elder Fisher

New Companion, Family History Work, and Continuing in Bad Bentheim

September 21, 2015

This week was just all around a good week--the work is going pretty good and we has a little bit of success this past week.  My new companion and I are really trying to just focus on being obedient and improving the missionary program here in Bad Bentheim.  We found 5 new investigators this week and we did a lot of stuff and also came up with a lot of ideas on how to help the program here and make the work go more smoothly and work better.

My new companion’s name is Elder Westbury and he is from Williamsburg, Virginia.  He will be celebrating being on his mission for a year next month-he came in the same group as my trainer did. My new companion is really excited to be out here on his mission and we are excited to work together.  Elder Westbury didn’t go to school before his mission but I think that he worked.  He is planning on attending BYU-Idaho after his mission so he is asking me lots of questions about it.

Elder Westbury and I have a lot of similarities and interests in common—like the fact that neither of us are from Utah, and he likes country music too!  He is the type of guy that makes you want to be better. I think that we will have a good transfer together and will have lots of fun times together.

When I was waiting for my new companion, we worked out the train schedule so that my new companion would show up before my last companion left so I didn’t have to wait at the train station.

We actually didn't end up teaching the lesson on Sunday, the Young Men’s president did, but we sat in there because it is good to build a relationship with the youth I think.  The lesson was on the commandments and what they are.
I am still in the car area and it is fun.We do not have a set service project exactly but we usually have service about 2-3 times a week.

It is cool about seeing the zone conference at our church building--I cannot really imagine what a zone conference in a smaller geographical mission would be like because when I see a missionary at a zone conference they can live 150-200 miles away and we are still in the same zone!

I will send pictures next week.  We were going to email at the McDonald’s to use the free wifi but there is a new McDonald’s opening tomorrow so the old one closed yesterday and we will be able to use the new McDonald’s next week.

That is too bad about BYU losing but there is always next week. My quote for the week—“ Quote of the week. "Life is like a football game."

Scripture for the week Malachi 4:5-6 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Spirit of Elijah scripture, from the things on I have seen on my mission, this promise is true and will really help in the hastening of the work.

Love you mom and dad and hope that you have a great week right now--thank you for the scriptures you shared--they were really good.  Next week can you send me a family history story?  I am trying to do more with family history work in my area because it really does help people to understand the gospel better and help less actives see the purpose of temples more clearly.

Staying in Bad Bentheim, New Companion, and Cars/Bikes

September 14, 2015

I am staying in the Bad Bentheim branch and my companion is leaving to go to the border near Poland (in eastern Germany). My new companion is transferring from Hamburg and was in the same arrival group as my trainer, Elder Gerlach. I am really excited to work with him.  It sounds like my new companion really wants to work and wants to be here so I am really glad.

You asked about a companion exchange: A companion exchange is when we work with another companion for 24 hours. It is fun and it gives us a chance to talk with other people and to work with someone else for a day.

Members do help with the lessons and we go with the members if we want them to--I think that the members in the ward are really good at helping us and actually doing missionary work. I wasn't able to really teach any discussion a this week but I was able to teach someone about eternal marriage. The Sunday School lesson is going to be something from the month of September and we are teaching it next week, I am going to discuss it with my next companion.

I think that the biggest thing I have been focusing on this past month is acting on impressions from the Holy Ghost and recognizing those promptings as well. I really tried focusing on the spirit a lot this past transfer and tried to just really focus on becoming a man of faith.

We use the car everyday but try to use our bikes when we work in our city. There are a lot of McDonalds and KFC in the west so we tend to eat there quite a bit.

It was great to hear about BYU winning their first 2 football games of the season --that is good for BYU but it is kinda weird to think that college football started and I didn't even notice.

Scripture for the week is Mormon 1:1 and the quote for the week is "some of those people are spare tires and some of them are flat tires"

Love you mom & dad and hope that you have a good week!! and that you can keep cool too!!

Interviews, Tender Mercies, and Pictures!!

August 31, 2015

Elder Fisher!!!
I am doing good.  I figured that you went to Sequoia from the pictures you sent but the smoke in the air doesn't sound to fun (there has been a forest fire going since July 31, 2015). Sounds like you got all your nature sightseeing done between the bears, deer, and trees. It will be interesting to go back to Sequoia and see actual mountains again and to listen for any people speaking German because I think a lot of people from France and Germany go there to visit (mom note: there are a lot of tourists from Europe when we visit). However, I prefer that I am on a mission too, than to be in Sequoia, because I can't teach trees the gospel!

Elder Rosenvall--his companion
I haven't fixed the picture situation but I am working on it. I will check the technology store next to my apartment next Pday because we are kinda busy today. (mom note: this was fixed because there were pictures sent later in the day!)

This past week I had my first interview with Präsident Fingerle and that was interesting and he is totally different from Präsident Kosak. It is literally a world of difference. It was good because I got to know him a little bit better and he got to know me a little bit better. You asked what a mission tour is-- A mission tour is when a general authority comes and teaches at a zone conference. It is cool.

When we teach Sunday school (Sunday School is only on the 3
rd Sunday), the members decide whether or not they will study the other lessons but we usually just pick a lesson and teach it to the 2 active youth in the ward.  When we play basketball on Friday, we wear our P-day clothes but still wear our name tags and we still talk to people about our church. Every week I answer someone’s questions about the church.

I haven't heard anything about the Mormon Tabernacle Choir touring Europe (summer of 2016) but that is cool that they are doing that.

I have seen tender mercies from the Lord on my mission, one is when a companion and I do not do a good job teaching a part of the church's history or a lesson. The investigator later does find the truth for themselves and still thinks that we are great teachers (sometimes it is hard to agree with that). It is a tender mercy for others and myself because others find the truth that they are looking for and I do not lose the opportunity to teach someone about the Great Plan of Happiness because of a mistake I made while teaching another lesson or when I didn't answer a question quite as good or directly as I should have.

My favorite thing to study this month has been "how to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ".  It was a very interesting topic to study and helped me realize that I can do a lot more to become a disciple myself.

I love you mom and dad and I hope that you have a good week and that you have fun with all the things you are going to do this week.

Love you and hope for the best.
